The archaeological site, visible today, of limited extension, is part of a larger area of excavation, subject to investigation in the years 1988-1989, on the occasion of some works aiming at the installation of pipes for the district heating system, in the area between Piazza San Francesco and Piazza Levi. The investigations brought to light – below the levels of the Medieval and Modern Age – a public fountain dating back to the Roman period, situated at the intersection of two cobbled streets, built with large stone slabs, which had been edgewise placed on a flat base and bound with metal clamps. The structure, perfectly preserved, is connected to a second smaller tank, connected with a lead pipe, used for water supply. Next to them, the excavation revealed the remains of several rooms belonging to a domus, a private home of the Roman times.
